A Few Thoughts on Writing…
I am always fascintated by the writing of books, the technique and imagination to build whole worlds. To me writing was always a refuge in which I could find a world far away from my own. With different, colors, and tastes, and cultures. I felt I traveled the world and the stars through books. Music too, music in my ears, and a book in my hand. That’s how I grew up. But much like a good film, or great music it can go south pretty quickly.
I think the industry is always focused on selling- and through that process the art (or maybe the craft of it all) gets lost in the turmoil. I still remember the most amazing books, and how fully immersed I was growing up. Victor Hugo, Isabel Allende, Even Harry Potter. They were all given to fully immersing one’s self in the book, and coming up for air once the book was over- not before. And being a reader by no means gives me insight into writing. And screenwriting or writing a play is by no means the same thing as writing a literary work. But I think somethings do stand across genres.
For one structure. I’ve begun reading extesnively lately, I have a kindle unlimited like so many of us. However, I keep finding myself in the same boat. Overall, there are some gems in there. But overall, I see a lot of the same problems over and over again.
The first being structure.
Okay — let’s talk about structure. And some of my readers might have more experience with structure than myself, so dont kill the messenger. Overall, structure isn’t there just to hold the writing together. This is true of playwriting, screenwriting, and I surmise that the same is true of writing novels. Structure to me has always been a building block to build a story. AND that’s the secret building. It’s like building a 50 story structure. You need a foundation, which is your external structure. Your midway point, the climax, the denouement, etc. Thats the external structure. (Of course this is dependent on what structure you are using) Whether it’s Harmon’s Circle, or Freytags Pyramid, three act, and beyond…
