Creating Art In A Pandemic

It’s November 2021- theaters have opened, restaurants have opened, a vaccine has been found, and has been mandated across the world. Meanwhile protests rage in not so far- off lands — the vaccine passports have created for some a relief and for others a return to a form of control and authoritarianism. The world more and more feels like a movie. So where does art fit into the chaos of the world. This by no means is the first time chaos has reigned, and theater and art have always been the places where we can come together to question where our world is going, and what it means to create art in challenging times. Theater has been the place, where we have rallied and the place where we have questioned our own humanity and for many our own morality.

Many of my peers have more than happily gone back to work, and I have found myself at a pause…. of my own making. No one to blame, not even myself. As new strains of the virus I find myself self- isolating. Trying to figure out my next steps. Now I still see my friends and family, go to the store and interact with others. It seems that for me, the idea of creating during a pandemic has been one that I haven’t wanted to participate in.
